Canberra is the capital of Australia and, therefore, home to the Australian Government.   Parliament House,  the High Court and numerous Government departments are all located in the city of Canberra.  The population is  345,000 inhabitants and it’s located 300 km south-west of Sydney and 650 km north-east of Melbourne.

Its streets are home to numerous  national monuments, art galleries, restaurants, entertainment, parks and gardens where flowers glow with vivid colours during the Festival Floriade.

In autumn, the sky of  Canberra is filled with balloons for the  Canberra Balloon Spectacular and the capital city  comes to life with the three days celebration of  the “Enlighten Festival”.

The Molonglo river flows through the city of Canberra, which was dammed to form the artificial  Lake Burley Griffin, located in the city center and where many sports enthusiasts go sailing, fishing and rowing.

Weather

Canberra has an oceanic climate, in which the four seasons are clearly distinguished due to its distance from the coast. Summers are hot and dry  and winters are cold and sometimes there are snowfalls.

January is usually the hottest month of the year, the average high is approximately  28º, however July is the coldest month with a minimum temperature of  -2º.

Many people wonder why Canberra is the capital city of Australia, being smallest and less important than cities like Sydney or Melbourne. Well, here’s the answer: Canberra was chosen as the capital of the country to end the rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne – a city located at a midpoint, Canberra, 248 km from Sydney and 480 km from Melbourne, was chosen!
