Dunedin

Want to study where it’s possible to all kinds of sports surrounded by one of the world’s most spectacular natural reserves? Yes? We recommend Dunedin, a university city par excellence and one of New Zealand’s most beautiful cities

Dunedin (Māori: Ōtepoti) known as the Edinburgh of New Zealand, is the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, and the principal city of the Otago Region. Dunedin is still considered to be one of the four main cities of New Zealand for historic, cultural, and geographic reasons.

The Dunedin urban area lies on the central-eastern coast of Otago, surrounding the head of Otago Harbour. The harbour and hills around Dunedin are the remnants of an extinct volcano.   The city suburbs extend out into the surrounding valleys and hills, onto the isthmus of the Otago Peninsula, and along the shores of the Otago Harbour and the Pacific Ocean.

Dunedin is home to the University of Otago, New Zealand’s first university (established 1869), and the Otago Polytechnic. Students account for about 21% of the city’s population.

Being a university city, the nightlife buzzes with funky bars and great restaurants and on the Otago Peninsula, the views are endless and the beaches are spectacular.   You’ll also discover incredible wildlife including the world’s rarest penguin colonies near Dunedin and the Royal Albatross Centre, at the foot of Taiaroa Head, the only place in the world on the mainland where you can view Northern Royal Albatross in their natural habitat.
