Townsville has a population of 165.000 inhabitants and is the largest Australian city above the Tropic of Capricorn. It is some 1354 km to the north of Brisbane and 350 km to the south of Cairns.
The main attractions are the ‘Strand‘, a beautiful beach surrounded by tropical gardens and the aquarium “Reef HQ“, where you can see examples of the native flora and fauna of the Great Barrier Reef.
In front of the city coastline, is ‘Magnetic Island’, an island of some 52km sq which is home to a National Park and bird sanctuary. Walking tracks can be taken between the populated bays and to a number of tourist destinations such as the World War II forts. Magnetic Island also is home is a large koala population.
The Great Barrier Reef runs along the coastline of the region and given that you can visit this great natural wonder within a couple of hours by ferry, makes Townsville is an important tourism destination.
Townsille also is home to the main campus of James Cook University. Boasting some 13.000 students it is considered to be one of the most importante universities in tropical investigation.
